We previously discussed what the Apex training program covers and how the current new hires are doing in A Closer Look: The Apex Training Experience Part 1. Now that the training period is over, our training program manager goes over how the program has changed over the years, and where the program is headed in the future.
MEET THE TRAINER
Our training program manager, Keith Dickson, discusses the results of this round of training and the future of our new hire training.
Keith has been in recruitment in Japan for over a decade. He is one of the 4 experienced recruiters who founded Apex in 2010. As one of the 4 Directors at Apex, he leads the medical device and consumer teams, as well as manages the Apex training program and talent acquisition.
WHY DID APEX START INVESTING HEAVILY IN A TRAINING PROGRAM?
There are many reasons why we started to invest heavily in training. The overall goal is to provide our clients and candidates with a high quality experience every time they use our services, regardless of which consultant they work with. We wanted to provide new hires, especially new Associates, with an overall guide of our recruitment philosophy and culture. It is really important to us that everyone at Apex understands our business and each stage of the recruitment process regardless of their involvement or experience. We are also really passionate about providing opportunities for professional development, and the training program allows us to educate and begin building a career at Apex for our new hires.
HOW DOES TRAINING HELP OUR INEXPERIENCED NEW JOINERS ADAPT TO WORKING IN A FAST PACED BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT LIKE APEX'S?
By the time the trainees complete our program, they fully understand how to do everything required of them and beyond; they are therefore able to prioritize tasks accordingly. They begin working independently with all the knowledge and tools necessary to be successful, and as such the transition into the fast paced work environment is fairly easy.
CAN YOU REMEMBER ANY PARTICULARLY SATISFYING OR POSITIVE ACHIEVEMENTS THAT CAME FROM TRAINING OVER THE YEARS?
The most satisfying achievement for me is seeing the previous “graduates” of our training program find success at Apex, whether that be through making a placement with a new client or getting promoted. Watching them take what they’ve learned in training and become more experienced and successful has been the highlight for me personally.
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE GOALS FOR THE TRAINING PROGRAM?
Overall we want to decrease the amount of time it takes our new hires to be successful and move up within the organization. We want to help guide the new hires through their professional development and their career progression and provide more education on the career advancement opportunities Apex offers. We have begun this already but we would like to continue to increase the involvement in the training program for other members in our organization. It’s great to have sessions led by junior and senior members as it provides different perspectives on learning and development. Also, we would like to continue to improve the training program so as to reduce the amount of training the new hires need later on.
HOW DID THE GROUP DO?
This fall’s new hire group of 8 was the biggest training group we have had. Of course there were challenges that came along with this, but everyone was great and worked together which made the training a success. This group is one of the smartest and exciting groups we’ve ever had and I’m looking forward to seeing them find success at Apex.
FINAL DAY CELEBRATION
A little tradition we have is to do a final day celebration once training is complete. This is important because at Apex we value celebrating our successes and rewarding hard work. This time we went to the Tokyo American Club to enjoy a great meal and have a friendly bowling competition.
The match was decided by a nail biting tie break and a difference of one point. Good job winning team!
